Duncan Smith (BA, MEd), Founder and Principal


Founder and Principal of ADC Associates, Duncan has been working with organizations, teams and individuals for over 30 years in the United States, Western Europe, Australia, and the Asia-Pacific region. An expert in enhancing the performance of organizations, groups, and individuals, he is regarded internationally as one of the Asia-Pacific region’s most experienced consultants in valuing and managing diversity. Duncan is particularly known for his ability to link performance and diversity initiatives with core business issues: increasing productivity, responding to globalization, attracting and retaining top talent, developing more effective leaders, enhancing creativity, innovation, and problem solving capabilities, and improving service delivery.


As a consultant, manager and executive educator, Duncan has focused his work in the fields of organizational development and diversity since 1988, working with multi-national companies, national and state governments, academia, and the non-profit sector. He has been Regional Diversity Advisor for Asia-Pacific and Japan for Hewlett Packard, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Melbourne Business School. Other clients include Cadbury Schweppes, Caterpillar, the Australian government, Goldman Sachs JBWere, National Australia Bank, the National Diversity Think Tank, Shell, the governments of Victoria and Tasmania, Towers Perrin, Westpac, and WMC.


As an OD consultant, Duncan focuses on working with executive and management teams, both in groups and one-on-one. He assists clients to identify and link business and personal performance motivators, to identify and overcome blockages to effective performance, and to develop new, more effective processes and behaviors for positive outcomes.


Duncan’s diversity strengths include designing and implementing organizational diversity strategies linked to business outcomes, generating culturally appropriate diversity solutions for global initiatives, measuring and evaluating diversity programs, in-depth work in gender and cultural diversity, and executive coaching and education.


A native of Boston (USA), Duncan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion from Trinity College (USA), which focused on Asian religion and culture, and a Master of Education degree from Harvard University, focusing on Organizational Behavior and Adult Learning. He has published articles in the Monash Mount Eliza Business Review, the Bulletin of the Business Council of Australia, and the U.S. periodical Cultural Diversity at Work, where he has also been guest Editor. In addition to maintaining an active schedule of consulting and executive education, he has lectured in Management, Organizational Behavior and Diversity, at Melbourne, RMIT, Swinburne and Monash Universities and at the Mt Eliza Centre for Executive Education. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Melbourne Business School, and is also an accredited administrator of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator.


With a strong interest in linking the globalization of commerce to the development of an equitable global society, Duncan focuses his work on the impact of national, organizational, and personal culture on successful work practice, using diversity to enhance performance for individuals, groups and organizations.
